I AM writing on behalf of the Inverloch RSL Sub Branch in response to Wendy Carlisle’s article in Herald Sun, “Diggers’ Trauma Study a Disgrace,” published on November 4, 2024. While we understand the concerns raised regarding the treatment of veterans, the frustrations as outlined in the article and the need for responsive action, we wish to express our strong support for the initiatives outlined in the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, particularly Recommendation 62, which advocates for the establishment and funding of a Research Translation Centre.
The establishment of a Research Translation Centre is not simply a matter of academic interest; it represents a vital opportunity to bridge the gap between research and practical application. Current and former members of the Australian Defence Force experience unique challenges related to mental health and wellbeing. By creating a dedicated centre focused on translating research findings into actionable support services and programs, we can ensure that veterans receive the best care and resources available.
At the Inverloch RSL Sub Branch, we have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of trauma and mental health issues among our veterans and their families. It is imperative that dedicated funding and resources are allocated to research initiatives that seek to understand and address these issues, leading to effective interventions that genuinely support the veteran community.
We believe that harnessing the collective knowledge and expertise from various research fields can lead to significant breakthroughs in understanding veterans’ mental health needs. The Research Translation Centre would serve as a focal point for collaboration among researchers, healthcare providers, and veteran organisations to foster innovations that can be quickly implemented to improve veteran welfare.
We urge both the government and the community to recognise the importance of this initiative and to support the full implementation of Recommendation 62 from the Royal Commission. Through concerted efforts and commitment, we can work towards a sustainable solution that truly addresses the complexities of veterans’ mental health.
