Bringing harmony to regional communities

2 min read

ESTABLISHED in 1926 by Mr John Meagher, the Victorian State Concert Orchestra has woven itself into the cultural fabric of Victoria’s rural communities, creating a legacy of musical enrichment that has spanned nearly a century. Through its tireless efforts, this orchestra has championed the cause of making live music accessible to those in areas where it is less prevalent, and its commitment to this mission remains as strong as ever.

After playing annually in Leongatha for over 49 years, the Victorian State Concert Orchestra will perform live at the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre on October 20 from 2pm until 4.30pm. Their final performance of the year.

President of the Victorian State Concert Orchestra and Concertmaster Loretta Frances Meagher said the orchestra is renowned for its iconic programming, entertaining Victorians of all ages.

“This programme includes a mix of classical and popular music, orchestral works and solo performances, appealing to a wide audience.”

In a time when the global pandemic disrupted many cultural institutions, this orchestra’s dedication to its cause never wavered. Though the COVID-19 lockdown temporarily paused their performances, the orchestra’s resilience has shone through as they work diligently to resume their pre-pandemic concert schedule of six performances a year: determined to reach 20 performances annually. Their recent return to the stage in regional towns marks a significant step in their recovery and ongoing efforts to enrich rural Victoria with the joy of live music.

What sets this orchestra apart is not just its historical significance but its inclusive approach to musical performance. With a diverse roster of musicians ranging from university students to seasoned retirees, the orchestra reflects a rich tapestry of experience and enthusiasm. This blend of youth and experience creates a dynamic and engaging program.

Opening with the Australian National Anthem with composer Peter Dodds McCormick and finishing with Time to Say Goodbye – (Duet) with composer Sartori/Quarantotto.

The orchestra’s collaboration with local councils has been instrumental in reaching these remote areas, bringing the magic of live music to communities that might otherwise be overlooked. Each performance is more than just a concert; it is a celebration of local culture and a testament to the power of music to unite and inspire.

As the orchestra sets its sights on expanding its reach even further, it is essential to recognise the broader impact of their work. By bringing music to the heart of Victoria’s rural towns, their efforts help to bridge the gap between urban and rural experiences, ensuring that the joy of live music is not confined to city limits.

In 2026 the Victorian State Concert Orchestra will reach their centennial year, let us celebrate the orchestra’s remarkable journey and support their ongoing mission. Their dedication to making live music accessible to all, coupled with their ability to adapt and overcome challenges, serves as a shining example of how the arts can thrive even in the most challenging of times.
