Fishing competition in Venus Bay this long weekend

1 min read

Venus Bay Angling Club’s fishing competition, being held throughout the King’s Birthday Weekend from June 7 to 10, offers affordable family fun, with senior and junior categories and the chance to enjoy companionship and a snag at Saturday night’s barbecue.

Competition is free for the club’s members and for children, and just $5 for non-member adults, with that fee also including the barbecue.

The club supplies the meat, with attendees encouraged to bring a salad or dessert to share.

Rods are available to borrow for those wanting to give fishing a go.

“Surf fishing is more the go for the next few months,” the club’s Roslyn Shelly said.

Those participating in any of the three and a half days of competition are a big chance to catch salmon and also have a chance of landing gummy sharks, with the possibility of the odd flathead.

Members taking part in the senior competition are in the running for a $50 voucher, usually from The Cavity, with that being the first prize, while non-members have a chance to earn a trophy.

The winning junior picks up a trophy, with treats such as a bag of lollies or icy poles on hand for competing kids.

At the clubroom, members can admire the newly updated honour board, with the names of the club’s presidents over the last couple of decades recently added.

In a period when the costs of living are becoming difficult for many, family membership of Venus Bay Angling Club is still just $40 a year, having been kept at $30 for about a decade.

As well as fishing competitions and barbecues, the club holds other social events such as movie nights.

The club is open between 4-6pm every Friday, with people able to borrow a rod or get information.
