VENUS Bay residents are in shock and Inverloch police are calling for witnesses or anyone with footage or information that may help reveal the identity of those responsible for the death of up to 10 wombats overnight on Tuesday February 18.
Most of the deceased wombats were found in the First Estate.
Leading Constable Owen Gough said police have been advised that three four-wheel-drives may have been involved.
“They were seen driving into Venus Bay about 10.30 last night,” Leading Constable Gough said, calling for anyone with dash cam footage that may have captured the vehicles to provide it to police.
“If we can identify the offenders, the Conservation Regulator has a compliance team which will investigate,” he said, stressing ‘destruction of native wildlife’ is a serious offence that can incur significant penalties.
He noted community members are doing all they can to help police identify those responsible.
“There are a lot of people upset about it,” he said, adding some are very distressed.
Many expressed their disgust in response to a Facebook post on the Tarwin Lower/Venus Bay Community Voice page.
Anyone with information or footage is encouraged to call Inverloch Police Station on 5674 1202 to speak to Leading Senior Constable Gough or Sergeant Brad Heber.
Anonymous reports and offers of dashcam or other CCTV footage can also be made to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crimestoppers website click HERE.
