THE good news is that our beaches continued to look better than they have in the past ahead of Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, March 3.
The bad news is that the clean-up crew which walked the beaches and carparks at Venus Bay on the day still managed to collect 15 bags of rubbish.
“The weather was against us, but we still had 12 people out there cleaning up today,” said active Venus Bay Surf Lifesaving Club member, Scott Cameron who co-ordinated the event.
“Two of them walked all the way through from Number 5 Beach to Number 1 Beach picking up rubbish.
“Each year the beaches keep getting better, which is great, but we still picked up 15 bags of rubbish, a lot of it in an around the carparks.
“One of the main things we see are baby wipes and hand wipes, but also lolly and ice cream wrappers and food rubbish.
“But since we started in 2012, the beaches have continued to get better and that’s a good thing to see.”
Ironically, the rain was on and off most of the morning, only clearing up when the work was done.
“We all get wet through. We’ll go and get changed and have a coffee but it’s satisfying to have had a good result,” said Scott.
Eastern Victoria MLC Melina Bath was one of the people who turned out to support the day.
