Newly announced South Gippsland Shire Council Citizen of the Year Ian Rasmussen is showing no sign of slowing down, describing himself as a “hyperactive 86-year-old” and continuing to contribute to several organisations in various voluntary posts.
He is driven by a love of all he does, explaining why he isn’t tempted to ease his responsibilities.
Ian has been secretary of Leongatha Senior Citizens Club for 13 years after 10 years as its treasurer, relishing the social interaction and helping run the organisation efficiently like a business to ensure its ongoing viability.
When the club’s 50th anniversary in 2017 was approaching, Ian hurled himself into researching its history, reflecting his commitment to preserving community heritage and proving a fascinating undertaking.
Having previously been with Leongatha Lions Club, he’s now part of Inverloch Lions Club, running the popular Wednesday Twilight Markets.
“I do all the stall bookings and market layout,” Ian said, using a spreadsheet to keep track of the bookings.
“I love doing it; the stall holders are fantastic,” he said.
While he’s been market manager for the last three years, Ian has belonged to Lions for two decades, having held positions including president and treasurer.
He is treasurer of Leongatha Girl Guides, having a daughter who is a guide leader and a granddaughter who is a member, and is not afraid to take a hands-on approach, having also painted the organisation’s hall.
Ian is treasurer at St Peter’s Op Shop where his wife works as a volunteer, and is also in charge of the books for the Berrys Creek Hall Committee, having organised fundraising events and participated in maintenance efforts to keep the hall in order.
His community service began with the Young Farmers.
He’s held a range of leadership roles with the Leongatha Probus Club to which he still belongs and has been instrumental in the success of events such as the Rose Show and Daffodil Festival through his involvement in the Leongatha Horticultural Society.
“Ian’s willingness to contribute his time and ability to so many organisations, and his readiness to help wherever needed, exemplifies his selflessness and dedication to community service,” it was stated in the nomination notes about him.
While his contributions are immensely valued by others, he doesn’t see any of it as a burden.
