KORUMBURRA Men’s Shed members are looking forward to their move to a new home, which while a short walk from their current premises will provide a much-needed upgrade in facilities and space.

The organisation received Victorian government funding last month to convert the locomotive storage shed in the Korumburra railyards to their new home.

Currently, the group’s expanding membership is crammed into the old railway goods shed.

“We’ve signed a lease with VicTrack,” the Shed’s John Davies said.

A planning permit is needed to reclassify the locomotive shed from its current transport status to community use.

The building will be converted from its current storage guise into a user-friendly facility with the addition of windows and a door, and improved car access will be created with the installation of a new crossover.

“I can’t see anything physically happening to the building until maybe early next year,” John said.

He said Korumburra Men’s Shed has occupied its present home for about seven years after a move from Coal Creek and has outgrown it.

“Our current building is way too small and there’s not enough space to do some work,” John said.

He estimates the new premises are at least six times larger, as well as being much more modern.
