CAR and motorcycle enthusiasts in their thousands filled the Korumburra Showgrounds for the 40th annual swap meet of the South Gippsland Branch of the Gippsland Historical
Automobile Club.

Close to 3000 passed through the gates to see 50 show cars on display and 150 stallholders selling everything from rare car parts to ice-cold slushies.

South Gippsland Branch President Tony Moon was more than pleased with the support shown by motoring enthusiasts and the public for the 40th anniversary of the event.

“The economic benefit to Korumburra is significant and can be seen by how much cash is withdrawn from banks on the day and busy local cafes,” said Mr Moon.

General merchandise of all types was available from the stalls circling the ground including traditional car and motorcycle parts, food and drink, bric-a-brac, books, stationary engines, and household and garden items.

“Something for everyone,” said Mr Moon.

“There was even a salt and pepper shaker stand.”

Local Lions and Rotary clubs benefit as well as local charities.

“This year the chosen charity for the South Gippsland Branch Gippsland Historical Automobile club stall is cervical cancer,” said Mr Moon.

The vintage and classic car display included a 1930 Bentley, Datsun 1500 ute, 1950 Harley-Davidson, 60’s era VW beach buggy, 1920s Rugby tourer, restored street rod, 1930s Ford Mainline, VK

Valiant Charger, 1939 Wolseley, EJ Holden station wagon, WW 2 Willys L134, Chevrolet Corvette, SL/R Torana 500 and a 1947 Mercury Eight.

“Each year we rely on 40 to 50 club volunteers to ensure it is a good, well-run event,” said Mr Moon.

The Korumburra swap meet has survived and is thriving while others have not.

Mr Moon blames excessive red tape.

“It makes it difficult to manage.”
