Monash medical students begin GP placements

SEVEN medical students from Monash University’s School of Rural Health have recently started their general practice placements in South Gippsland.

The fourth-year students will be based in practices in Foster, Leongatha, Korumburra and Wonthaggi for the next 18 weeks and work alongside local general practitioners.

Monash Rural Health academic coordinator Jennie Casey explains that the students will participate in wave or parallel consulting while on general practice placement - so residents may be seen by a student for part of their GP appointment.

“Our students will see the patient for the first part of the consultation, and are then joined by the GP for the conclusion. This gives medical students the unique opportunity to develop a rapport, take histories and put their skills into practice in a safe environment.”

Jennie encourages the local community to help make the students feel at home this semester.

“I know the South Gippsland community will give our students a warm welcome. This is a great opportunity to showcase everything we have to offer here in the region - our beautiful beaches, amazing local produce and incredible trails.”
