No power, no phones, no internet at Fish Creek

FISH Creek and Walkerville have temporarily been left out of the twenty-first century.

Stranded without power since storms lashed the area on Sunday and Monday, farms homes and businesses in outlying areas have been relying on generators and the goodwill of neighbours.

One service station has resorted to cash and IOU’s according to one farmer who has been taking boarders stranded without power or heating.

“We’ve been using generators and wood fires,” said the operator of Fish Creek Farms.

The Fish Creek Post Office has power but no phone, Internet or card machine.

“We can’t do anything,” said a frustrated postal worker.

“We can’t even handle cash without an online computer.”

Postal deliveries and parcel pick-up are still operating.

Fish Creek Pharmacy and General Store and Fish Creek Hardware are operating business as usual with the use of an ADSL service connected to the wired phone network.

“A lot of Fish Creek is still without phone or the Internet," according to Fish Creek Hardware.

“Walkerville still has no power, and we’ve sold out of generators.”

Fish Creek Farms three kilometres from Fish Creek lost power on Sunday.

“They contacted us today to say they may have to turn the power off."
