Powerhouse opening night for True West

1 min read

THERE were congratulations all around on Friday evening at the opening of True West.

Stellar performances by the cast, and hard work from those behind the scenes, left everything on stage in a standout performance.

As one theatregoer noted, “Joel Stevenson and Corey Green gave powerhouse performances. They left it all on the stage. Soo good!”

And without giving away the ending True West by Sam Shepard is a modern classic.

As the Daily Mail once stated about Sam Shepard’s play.

“Playwright, Sam Shepard wields language like a blunt instrument. The brothers' confrontations create exciting, sometimes wildly funny theatre.”

And Wonthaggi Theatrical Group, True West Director Wayne Moloney has certainly brought the myriad of layers and onerous topics to life.

"It's interesting, you have two completely different characters with their own insecurities and jealousy, who are both yearning deep down for what the other has – the freedom, the stability," Wayne explained.

“I don’t believe you master a role until you become the person rather than play the character. Blessed with intuitive actors like Corey and Joel, I felt like a spectator as two people I didn’t know became a reality.

"(Last night we were) flying!"

Wildly conflicting personalities, estranged brothers Lee and Austin meet unexpectedly whilst Austin is sitting their mother's house.

Consumed by sibling rivalry and envy, the brothers embark on a volatile journey of personal revelation and self-destruction.

Andrew Pollock and Sally Lewer-Ahearn round out the brilliant quartet cast.

With only five shows remaining including two this weekend, today (Saturday, January 18) at 5pm and tomorrow (Sunday, January 19) at 5pm, and three next Friday (7.30pm), Saturday (5pm) and Sunday (5pm) do not miss your opportunity to see this powerhouse play by Wonthaggi Theatrical Group.
