Take your last look at Korumburra history

THE old Korumburra Library and former Korumburra Shire offices are in the process of being demolished this week to make way for the development of a new, $20 million Michael’s IGA Supermarket in the town.

The demolition contractor has already removed the top floor from the former Korumburra civic centre, home of the old library and are presently turning their attention to the former Korumburra Shire Council offices and council chamber, in recent times, the Korumburra Community Meeting Room.

There is also the matter of the historic mural on the front of the old shire offices, about which there had been some offer of digital recording and various artifacts have been handed over to the Korumburra and District Historical Society.

The plan is for much of the site for the new full-service supermarket to be cleared by Christmas, including the houses in Victoria Street that will make way for the corner location for the supermarket, increasing its visibility to the passing trade, and accessibility for local shoppers.

General Manager for Michael’s Supermarkets, Dom D’Agostino, is delighted to see the project finally on its way.

“With COVID intervening, the project is going to cost considerably more than we first thought but we made the commitment to the community and we’re moving ahead with that now,” Mr D’Agostino said.

“We’ve had a meeting with the builders today and we’re lining up the trades to get started but we would hope to be making a start on the construction towards the end of January.”

The supermarket will be twice the size of the present Michael’s IGA in Korumburra and slightly bigger than the one in Leongatha, about 2800m2 at Leongatha compared to 3200m2 in Korumburra but very much a similar operation.

The company which operates Michael’s Supa IGA in Leongatha and Korumburra also operates stores in Keysborough, Shepparton and Eaglehawk, a suburb of Bendigo.
