THE weather that blew across Victoria on Wednesday this week did nothing to change plans at Stony Creek on Thursday, January 18 for what looks to be a great day of holiday racing in South Gippsland, starting at 2pm.
CEO of the Stony Creek Racing Club, Adam Olszanski, had the fingers crossed, with anything from 10mm to 100mm predicted but it was the lesser of those extremes that fell on the local course, having it in great shape for a terrific eight-race card.
“Yes, it’s all systems go. We had 10mm fall this morning (Wednesday) and has led to a near-perfect Soft 5 racing surface,” said Mr Olszanski.
“There’s a little rain forecast tomorrow but it shouldn’t threaten the event,” he said.
“Looking forward to seeing everyone trackside for the School Holiday Race Day with a lot of entertainment for the whole family.”

Gates open 12.30pm, first race 2.00pm, last race 5.30pm.
Catering: Canteen, Port Welshpool Coastguard BBQ and Hot-To-Trot coffee van in operation.

- Race 1 Number 6. Eagle Warrior. Only had two starts for one second when he fought hard to the line at Stony Creek on December 29 after being inconvenienced at the start on a Soft 7 track over 1700 metres. Races as if he will enjoy the 2100 metres, especially out of barrier 2 with the inside barriers a distinct advantage last time at Stony Creek. Out of the Griffiths and Kock stable at Cranbourne with Lachlan King in the saddle and looks better than these.
- Race 2 is the South Gippsland Sentinel Times Maiden Plate. Tough race to settle on the chances but Number 8 Maid of Mystery worth a try in only her third start after a good showing at Cranbourne a fortnight ago when she boxed on steadily for third. Fitter for this and out of barrier four is an advantage.
- Race 3. Sit this one out. No appeal among these but if you want an interest, Number 4 Witnessimpact from barrier 4 is an honest toiler who should be in the finish.
- Race 4. take your pick out of Number 2 I’m Back in Town, Number 3 Just Bolts, Number 6 Artic Girl, Number 7 Limb Runner and Number 12 Shyleah having its first run after some good trials.
- Race 5. The top weight Graewazi claims three and shapes as the one to beat but include Number 2 Abaddon also with the claim, Number 4 Russian Summer coming back from city racing, and Number 6 I’m Cheeky an honest performer from barrier 1 in your considerations.
- Race 6. The top two Number 1 Juice Box and Number 2 Magwazi look a class above these, both with a claim but the hit-rate of the experienced Number 5 The Great Bratski out of barrier 1 shapes as a knockout hope.
- Race 7. Number 1 Inthelapofthegods and an impressive second placegetter at Stony Creek last time out Nightsun as well as Number 9 Sweet Liaison and Number 6. Halcyon East deserve respect in this with a last start winner at Stony, Sisu not out of it. If the inside draw counts on the day, maybe Halcyon East gets the nod.
- Race 8. Number 9. Dancinginthedark from barrier 4 looks the winner in this after excuses when second at Werribee last time with Number 5 Mootessa, also from a good barrier next best. But there are a lot of chances including Number 6. Queen Of Tayrona impressive when second at Stony Creek last time, Number 10. Peppino, Number 7 Reparter and Number 8. Roc De Russian from barrier 2 in with a chance.
