UPDATED: ‘Bomb’ drama unfolds at Wonthaggi Police Station

1 min read

UPDATED 2.45PM: THE arrest of a 24-year-old man from Leongatha at 3am overnight by Wonthaggi Police has had an alarming sequel at the Wonthaggi Police Station on Tuesday morning when a bomb was found among the items seized during the incident.

Police say the man tried to evade police when they attempted to pull him over in Wonthaggi, after they noticed him driving erratically.

The offender allegedly drove off in an effort to evade police but reportedly bogged his car while trying to make his getaway and then legged it from the scene with police giving chase on foot.

They ultimately caught and arrested the man but not before he challenged the arresting officers.

The man was placed into custody, following which police allegedly found a bag containing firearms and drugs.

A vehicle was also seized during the arrest and transported to the station for further investigation, where a bomb was subsequently located.

The bomb squad was called to the police carpark in Baillieu Street East Wonthaggi, where police bomb experts used a remote-controlled bomb disposal robot to open the device. Police said while the casing was empty, the bomb components were located separately and seized.

NEWS UPDATE 10am: Police have removed the 'crime scene' tape they used to cordon off a perimeter around the police station and nearby streets and appeared to de-escalate the situation without incident, although they are yet to report on the status of the bomb.

Police taped off the entrance to the Wonthaggi Police Station carpark in Baillieu Street East, at the rear of the police station, keeping members of the community and the media well away while the bomb drama was defused at about 10am on Tuesday morning.
