LOCATED in the popular Walkerville, South Gippsland region, ‘Wirrega’ is a wonderfully crafted coastal retreat overlooking Bass Strait southeast to Wilson’s Promontory.
Set amongst 1.95ha* (4.84ac*) of tranquil coastal flora and with unfettered access to Cape Liptrap Coastal Park and Maitland Beach (Waratah Bay) at your front boundary, a short stay at ‘Wirrega’ is the tonic that soothes the soul and warms the heart.
The ‘Barn Style’ home
In keeping with the coastal surrounds, the spacious barn-style ‘Wirrega’ lodge was fashioned from recycled materials constructed using hand-adzed timber beams and weathered poles that date back a century or more. Walls are constructed of mud brick using a slurry of ochre and applied using a variation of the wattle-and-daub technique used in pioneering times that, as a result, has imparted a wonderful rustic warm finish.
The floor is a joy to walk on, it looks like dressed and polished stone but is an amalgam of rammed earth, clay and sand stabilised with bitumen.
Orientated to the southeast, extensive use of floor to ceiling glass across the front of ‘Wirrega’ creates a beautiful dining room, kitchen and living room vista across the front of the property to Bass Coast and Wilson’s Promontory beyond.
Rustic charm with a touch of luxury
‘Wirrega’s’ interior fixtures and fittings combine rustic charm with luxury appeal, the central statement piece being the wrought iron spiral staircase that winds its way to the loft and 2 double bedrooms on the first floor.
With 7 bedrooms in total, accommodation consists of a further 5 bedrooms on the ground level, each with a double bed, plus a single bed on an upper level and each with their own private doorway access to grounds. All bedrooms lead to the substantial living area, dining room and chef style kitchen, all heated by way of a French imported wrought iron fireplace.
Two bathrooms, a separate toilet and mudroom / beach changeroom, completes the main accommodation.
Make money, move in or both
