AMY Hodson is swimming for a cause again in 2025 – taking on her third Super Swim challenge to raise funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation with a plan to swim 30kms and raise $3,000.
Did you know that every minute of every day a sick child is admitted to hospital in Australia, and in support of these other children Amy joined the Starlight Swim Challenge to help families through these difficult times.
Amy’s mother Robyn said Amy’s motivation for the challenge came from her time in and out of hospital as a young child. Amy has no vision in her right eye, she was born with a rare cataract on the right side and underwent surgery at only eight weeks old. Since then, she spent many years at the Royal Children’s Hospital for appointments and further surgeries due to her cataract.
Amy swims with the South Gippsland Bass Swimming Club (SGB), training three to four times a week at the YMCA in Wonthaggi – totalling approximately three to four kilometres per training session and with the support of her coaches, Amy will track every swim at training and every extra swim over the month of February.
Already raising 23% of her goal Amy said she has also donated $30 of her own pocket money.
Recognising this Super Swim Challenge, in 2023 Bass MP Jordan Crugnale recognised Amy’s commitment to others, awarding her with the Community Gem 2023 award. Ms Crugnale said, “your courage and tenacity in navigating your own vision impairment and the love, care and support you demonstrate at home for your two siblings who have Autism and ADHD, is testament to the remarkable young person that you are.
“Despite your own health challenges, you found a passion for swimming and coupled with the support of the community you have made a real difference in the lives of other sick kids and their families. Your contribution to the Starlight foundation Super Swim Challenge, swimming 25 kms and raising over $10,000 for a charity so close to your heart, and as a kid helping other sick kids is simply inspirational. So many hearts are singing.”
