Bass Coast College netballers celebrate state title

BASS Coast College’s senior netball team won the School Sport Victoria state final recently.

Played at the Waverley Centre, the team played three games in pool B.

Taking time to gel as a team, Bass Coast College (BCC) lost to Maribyrnong College in the first game by one goal, losing right on the buzzer.

They went on to defeat Galen College Wangaratta by two goals and Rowville Secondary College by four goals to finish in first place in pool B.

From there, they progressed to the second semi-final and competed against Trinity College Colac – the runner-up of pool A.

BCC once again came out on top to win by three goals and earn a spot in the grand final.

BCC found itself face-to-face with Maribyrnong again, but this time it was ready to take on the challenge.

The girls played a strong, impressive game and walked away with an amazing 13-goal victory.

“We went in with a good mindset and once we had it, we got up there,” netballer Amy Scott said.

During the final stretch of the last game, all the Year 12 team members took to the court to represent the school for the last time.

“They all played really well. They are a talented group of netballers who play for different clubs, so it was a matter of getting used to each other at the start,” coach Saskia Schmidt said.

“They’ve played together for a long time, they play basketball together – we’re just very fortunate to have this group of kids who like each other and play well together.

“It was really lovely for the last couple of minutes to just have the Year 12s on court as a kind of a send-off from their time at our school.”

McKenzie campus principal Ross Bramley congratulated the girls on their success.

“It’s always an amazing achievement just to make state finals, but to actually win a state title is very, very rare,” he said.

“It’s something I hope they do take away from their time at school because it doesn’t happen very often – particularly when you’re taking on schools who have sports academies and things like that.”

Five of the girls went on to compete in the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition grand finals on Saturday, September 14.

Bass Coast College’s senior basketball team – consisting of many members of the state netball team – competed at state level on Thursday.

Played at the State Basketball Centre, the girls won their match against Mansfield Secondary College 52 to 27.

However, they were defeated by Box Hill Senior Secondary College and Western Heights College and went on to place third in their section.

It was an amazing effort to make it to state level in both sports and the school is incredibly proud of the achievements.
