THE main roller door of Gerald’s Shed in Venus Bay was damaged, but not breached, by a night-time ram raid at the Venus Bay Angling Club.
“The alarms went off, but nothing was stolen,” said club treasurer Tony Bryant.
Undeterred, the club is hosting a fisheries information night this Thursday (April 17).
Affectionately known as Gerald’s Shed in honour of former club member Gerald Batt, the Venus Bay Angling Club can be found at the end of Fisherman’s Road in Venus Bay.
The fisheries information night will be an opportunity to discuss Victoria’s Better Boating Fund and future works on ramp upgrades.
“We need an extra ramp for kayaks,” said Tony Bryant.
“Lots of people fish out of kayaks.”
Fisheries enforcement and compliance will also be discussed along with fish stocking, fisheries management and Victoria’s recreational fishing grants program.
Tony Swinden said estuary perch in the Tarwin River are among the finest in Victoria and are used for breeding and restocking.
The Venus Bay Angling Club holds fishing competitions every month with senior and junior trophies and prizes awarded after each competition to members. Club members are also eligible for annual trophies for the heaviest fish, highest aggregate points score, best gummy shark and best elephant fish. Double points are awarded for whiting and perch.
The Easter Fishing Competition will be held from 12pm on Good Friday April 18, to 3pm Easter Monday, April 21 with weigh-in between 4pm and 6pm on April 18, 19 and 20, and 2.30pm to 3pm on April 21.
A barbecue will be held on Saturday night April 19 at 6pm.
A highlight of the Easter fishing competition will be the Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday at 10am in the children’s playground around Gerald’s Shed. The Easter Egg Hunt is a free event open to all children up to 12 years of age.
“We usually expect 70 to 80 children for the Easter Egg Hunt,” said social coordinator Annmarie Swinden.
“Our social nights are also popular,” Ms Swinden said.
“We’ve had an Elvis night and a club trip to Sandy Point.”
Fishing competitions will be held in May, the King’s Birthday weekend in June, July, August, September, Melbourne Cup weekend, November and December.
If you’re interested in becoming a member of the Venus Bay Angling Club or would like further information you can drop into Gerald’s Shed by the boat ramp on Fisherman’s Road any Friday between 4pm and 6pm.
