Koony-Leongatha RSL claim women’s cricket premiership

1 min read

KOONWARRA Leongatha RSL have narrowly defended their 20-over total of 131 to take out the first premiership of the 2024-25 Leongatha and District Cricket Association season.

Batting first at the McMahon Reserve in Wonthaggi on Sunday, the Koony-RSL women had good contributions down the order from Melissa Gheller 33, co-captains Britney Thomas 10 and Gabrielle Perry 17 and a 14 off 12 at the end by Kathy Zacharopoulos to post a competitive target batting first.

However, while Phillip Island had the goal in their sights right through, they ultimately lacked the dominant innings or two needed to carry them to victory, just failing by six runs in the final analsys despite a last-gasp innings of 18 by Rosanna Martino.

Koony RSL’s bowlers shared the wickets around, producing six outs at key moments, also with Gabrielle Perry figuring in a runout to keep the Island women on the backfoot.

Phillip Island managed 125 off their 20 overs but it was Koonwarra Leongatha RSL’s day by six runs.
