Lights, camera, action for Wonthaggi’s first night match

1 min read

THE rain wasn’t going to dampen the celebrations at the Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve on Saturday evening as the Wonthaggi United Soccer Club officially opened their new Club Pavilion.

The project proudly supported by the Bass Coast Shire Council and Victorian State Government has taken over 10 years and countless hours by dedicated volunteers to make this dream a reality.

The purpose-built changerooms and storage give the club a sense of belonging in the Wonthaggi sporting community, whilst having access to canteen facilities also provides the club with a much-needed injection of funds. The new lights included in the project allow full use of both pitches for training to further develop players, building stronger teams for now and the future. As we look towards the future, we can only see the club growing in numbers and this new facility will be a fantastic home for our future Soccer champions.

After Jordan Crugnale MP, Cr Leticia Laing and club president Marion Bals officially turned the lights on it was action on the pitch, as the Wonthaggi and Lang Lang teams took to the field for the first-ever fixtured night games at the Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve.

It was all Lang Lang in the Men’s match with the Wonthaggi team going down 6-1, the game was not without its excitement with Jason Torrens booting a massive free kick high into the goals to put Wonthaggi on the board.

The U12b was a close contest with both teams pushing through the winter downpour, Wonthaggi eventually taking the points with a 5-3 victory. The
highlight of the match was the first goals for both Jedda Tagell and Vivienne Hallam in a strong team performance.

The Wonthaggi Women, who have been a little inconsistent this season, proved too strong for the Lang Lang ladies taking the points to finish off a great night of soccer.
