Rods and reels to fly at Venus Bay

By Andrew Paloczi

VENUS Bay fishermen and women will engage in social but spirited competition this weekend as they seek a prize-winning catch.

The Venus Bay Angling Club fishing contest runs from noon today, September 9 until 3pm on Sunday.

Weigh ins take place each day, with results announced on Sunday and the winner to pocket a $50 voucher for a local hospitality business.

Club members, who pay just $30 membership fee per year, compete for free, while non-members can join in the fun for only $5.

That entry fee not only includes the competition, but also meat at the event’s Saturday night barbecue.

Members and visitors are requested to bring a salad or dessert to share.

There will also be a Saturday night raffle.

Venus Bay Angling Club member Roslyn Shelly is looking forward to the competition and encourages people to take part, and enjoy the friendly atmosphere.

With some club members still soaking in the sun’s rays further north, your odds of winning may be a little better than they would be at other times of year.

Of course, if you don’t catch anything worthy of bragging you can always let everyone know about the one that got away.
