LEONGATHA Gymnastic Club (LGC) were recently crowned Small Club of the Year by Gymnastics Victoria, which was an honour for the small not-for-profit club.
The club prides itself on being very community based, affordable and accessible with a range of programs for everyone from toddlers to the elderly.
“Gymnastics Victoria were looking for clubs that are inclusive, clubs that are friendly, welcoming, and then obviously follow all of their policies and rules,” explained Head Coach and Competitive Program Coordinator for LGC Lily Akers on winning the award.
“We’re trying to keep as many kids as possible and make it open to as many families and groups, and then also trying to make as many different programs as possible that are suitable to all different types of athletes.”
About 230 athletes use the gym, with both recreational and competitive classes offered.
The recreational classes encourage physical activity and personal growth in a fun, engaging environment that extends to athletes of all skill levels.
There is a ninja gym for athletes that need a bit more support and an outlet for energy; an under fives class and a Fit4Life program for those over 50.
There are also more structured and competitive gymnastics classes, such as the GymStar program which provides a pathway for athletes who are aspiring to compete.
Experienced leaders mentor junior coaches, fostering a nurturing atmosphere where they can grow their skills alongside the athletes.
The club also offers classes at a secondary location in Toora to increase participation.
This year, LGC is reintroducing a team in the Australian Levels Program (ALP) for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG), with the goal of qualifying for the State Championships.
The club hasn’t competed in ALP for several years, and they’ve never reached a state-level competition before, but they have five dedicated athletes training more than 11 hours per week, working toward this goal with the support of their parents, community, and the club.
In October the team will go to Maffra for the South East Regional event in the hopes of taking out first place and in doing so qualify for the State Championships.
As a not-for-profit that doesn’t receiving funding and with low fees, the club relies heavily on the generosity of local sponsors, to help provide opportunities for their athletes.
As such, LGC are always looking to collaborate with more businesses that share their vision of supporting young, passionate, dedicated athletes and building a strong community.
