Trap shooter Mel Chapman wins 2025 Budge Shield

1 min read

THE prestigious Budge Shield for trap shooting has been won by Mel Chapman after a thrilling day’s shooting at the Wonthaggi Gun Club.

With ground work about to start on a new clubhouse and a new shooting range ahead of the Victorian State Ball Trap finals in September the club could not be in better shape.

Wonthaggi Gun Club President Stuart Allen said a land extension of ten hectares has been welcomed by the club.

“The club received a grant of $235,000 back in 2022 but will still be relying on the generosity of sponsors and building suppliers to meet the total estimated cost of $400,000 for the new clubhouse,” said Mr Allen.

The State Ball Trap Championships will be held at the Wonthaggi Gun Club on the first Saturday in September and the club hopes to have much of the new clubhouse and shooting range well underway.

“The engineering specifications are now complete,” said Mr Allen.

“Working drawings for the new building should be finished by the end of the month.”

The club is now waiting on approval of permits from VicRoads to re-surface the entrance to the shooting range at the club’s cost.

“The club has over 100 members,” said Mr Allen.

“We are adding more disciplines of clay target shooting including Skeet, ISSF Skeet, and FITASC Sporting regarded as the toughest and most popular of the sporting clay disciplines.

“Our dream is to add Trench or Universal Trench Layout too.”

“We welcome corporate days at the club and the RSL is very active.”
