Wonthaggi triumphs on the pitch

1 min read

IT WAS a huge weekend for the Wonthaggi United Soccer Club, and it all started Friday evening when coach Marion Bals collected the U13 Girls League Championship trophy at the 2024 GSL awards ceremony. A great effort for the girls in their first year of this competition.

Next it was Zoe Allen from the Senior Women’s team, who with 22 votes and 19 goals secured both the GSL Golden Boot and GSL MVP for 2024. An amazing achievement for a brilliant player.

Our Club then looked towards Sunday where we had three teams take the field in the Semi Finals at Newhaven.

First up was the U13 girls who despite their opposition having a home ground advantage started with real purpose. A huge congregation of Wonthaggi supporters cheered as Wonthaggi took control early scoring four goals before the halftime break. A little slower in the second half and a strong Phillip Island applied more pressure but it was too late, and Wonthaggi took the final 5-0. They will now compete against Korumburra next week in the Grand Final.

Captain of the Girl’s team Skye Fisher also celebrated her 50th game representing Wonthaggi on Sunday and showed amazing strength and composure as she led her team to victory.

The results didn’t go as well for the U12a Wonthaggi team, in a tough match scores were level at the final whistle, seeing the teams head into extra time. Drouin held composure and were able to secure their spot in the Grand Final next week with a very close 2-1.

Unfortunately, the Senior Women’s team also went down to a strong Phillip Island Team. Phillip Island had fired early and had a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime. Wonthaggi came out firing in the second half applying strong pressure in the forward line, but it wasn’t quite enough, Phillip Island finishing strong with a 5-2 victory.
