BLUSTERY wind, driving rain and a hail-shower could not deter true sailing enthusiasts from the first day of the Wooden Dinghy Classic Regatta at Inverloch.
Entertained late into the afternoon by the Wonthaggi Citizens Band lovers of classic sailing dinghies ignored the chilly conditions to admire and compare their classic sailboats.
Former Commodore Simon Wilson presented prizes for the best presented boats at a special classic regatta dinner held inside the South Gippsland Yacht Club boatshed.
Traditional wooden dinghies have a strong following including Fireballs, Mirrors, Sabres, Sabots, Sailfish, Shearwater, Herons, McGregor Canoe, Flying Ant, Arctic Tern, double ended Skerry and of course Inverloch’s own locally designed Moth.
Perfect conditions for sailing on Day 2 resulted in two races being scheduled.
Highly competitive racing, several broken rudders and more than one upturned dinghy kept spectators on the beach well entertained.
The Inverloch Classic Dinghy Regatta is an annual showcase of sailing timber boats built and raced between the 1940’s and 1980’s.
The next race series for the South Gippsland Yacht Club will be the Inverloch and District Community Bank Labour Day weekend on Sunday March 9 and Monday March 10.
Sailing is always subject to weather conditions.
