Competition to name an old girl

1 min read

THE COW at Poowong library needs a name and a competition is underway to find the best one.

The cow has graced the entrance to the Poowong library for over twenty years and was originally part of the Dairy Expo when it was first held in Poowong.

For the town’s 150th anniversary celebrations held earlier this year, in April, to ensure the town looked its best, the old girl underwent a makeover.

“She was covered in trees and bushes and stuff, and was quite deteriorated,” said Megan Le Serve, Myli Program Officer.

Local mum and daughter team, Wendy and Keira Tilling, stripped the cow back and repainted her afresh.

The local Lions Club also tidied up the old cow’s home in the library garden, weeded, put down mulch, and replaced the sign.

While another cow that resides at the Poowong Consolidated School has been named Clover, after one of the local teachers wrote a book about a cow called Clover, this library cow hasn’t yet been so lucky.

When she returned just before the big weekend with her shiny new coat, looking magnificent, Megan decided it was time to give her a name.

“She looked amazing and I thought she needed a name, and thought the competition was something fun to do, and the kids have been loving it.”

Megan has a stack of entries so far, and the Poowong Pub has donated a $50 voucher for the winning name.

The search closes on Thursday July 11 and entries can be made at the Poowong library or online at myli.au/namethatco.
