FLOATING to a photo finish in the Australia Day duck derby at Tarwin Lower, South Gippsland Shire Deputy Mayor Cr Sarah Gilligan could not be happier handing first prize to two local boys.
Organised by the Tarwin District Auto and Machinery Club, the Australia Day duck derby and long table BBQ was a fundraiser for the Tarwin Sharks Netball Club hopefully to help build new change rooms.
Auto and Machinery Club President Graham Kennedy said Australia Day duck racing at Tarwin Lower is always a fun event, which just keeps getting bigger each year.
The traditional long-table BBQ lunch on the banks of the Tarwin River provides a perfect setting for the duck racing which starts promptly at 1pm.
“We put the ducks in the water and wait to see who wins,” said Mr Kennedy.
No ducks are harmed in the racing with the ducks resembling the bathtub variety.
Two hundred duck punters lined the banks of the Tarwin River for this year’s event.
“It’s good to see people from the local community out having a good time,” said Mr Kennedy.
The Tarwin District Auto and Machinery Club has raised $40,000 for local charities.
Salads, sausages and burgers at the long table, the chance of picking a winning duck with classic and veteran vehicles on display, what more could you ask for on Australia Day?
