NAIDOC Week at Inverloch Kongwak PS

1 min read

DEADLY doors, possum skin prizes and a welcome to country by Boon Wurrung woman Sonia Weston enthralled students at Inverloch Kongwak primary school for NAIDOC Week.

Proudly displaying first nation colours students listened attentively as Aunty Sonia explained how knowing more about local Aboriginal culture teaches you more about the local environment.

Hitting message sticks Sonia Weston encouraged students to vote for their favourite ‘deadly’ classroom door.

Each winning door receives a possum skin prize and lunch with Sonia representing the Bunurong elders.

Celebrating the school phrase for respecting traditional Bunurong and Boon Wurrung peoples ‘Keep the fire burning, blak, loud and proud’ prep students constructed a tissue paper tribal fire between their classrooms.

Students at Inverloch Kongwak Primary School have undertaken to recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture beyond NAIDOC Week.

‘We will keep the fire burning by honouring and celebrating the stories, traditions and achievements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.’
