South Gippsland Hospital celebrate Elders during NAIDOC week

1 min read

SOUTH Gippsland Hospital (SGH) was delighted to celebrate Elders during NAIDOC week by holding a special event with the community and key service providers on Wednesday, July 5, 2023.

Those in attendance were gifted with knowledge about Aboriginal Culture when traditional custodians, Sonia and Darren from Yalluk Bulluk, shared stories, teaching about the past, connection, spirit and the importance of family and Elders in our lives.

The occasion was very moving, and coming together, as one, at the conclusion of formal activities to yarn over a warm tasty cup of soup was an especially significant moment after the welcome to country, smoke cleansing and flag raising ceremony.

SGH was appreciative of members who attended from the Foster SES, Foster CFA, South Gippsland Shire Council, Gippsland Region Public Health Unit, Manna Gum Community House, and Royal Flying Doctor Service.

SGH was also grateful that many community members joined our Board Deputy Chair, Graeme Baxter, and staff in celebrating NAIDOC week this way.

CEO Paul Greenhalgh said that it was a beautiful, moving event, and that it was a privilege to hear what Sonia and Darren had to say about their culture.

“I was moved by the authentic message about connection to ancestors and nature for guidance, as well as the message about the importance of family and Elders in our day-to-day existence. Family is not defined by blood for Aboriginal People, and this is something I am sure many in our broader community can relate to.”

Sonia Weston said in a Facebook post after the event “Thank you South Gippsland Hospital for having us at your flag raising yesterday. Thank you to the community and community services that came and listened to us sharing our beautiful culture. We love your community, our family.”
