Power line downed by cattle truck in Leongatha

1 min read

A CATTLE truck hit and downed power lines in Young Street, near Bruce Street in Leongatha this afternoon, an off-duty SES member and community member who happens to be an electrician quickly on scene to direct traffic away from the incident.

Emergency services then arrived, with Val Bremner of Leongatha SES first, followed by police.

A team from Ausnet assessed the damage.

Witness Bailey was working on a car nearby with friends, dealing with a challenging issue.

"We just thought the situation couldn't get more chaotic and then a truck's taken out a power line," he said, believing the driver didn't notice the incident despite the force being sufficient to move a power pole and shake the lines.

"It probably was a bit low," he said of the wire crossing the road that was brought down.

We thought it was something smacking around inside his truck and then we saw all the lines shaking," Bailey said, the truck having turned out to be empty.

Leongatha SES member Chas Baillie saw the truck go past, then noticed a gentleman waving his arms as the incident happened, Chas coming to inspect the situation and keep traffic away from the downed  wire while  awaiting emergency services and AusNet personnel, being helped by local electrician Grant McDonald who was also quickly on scene after hearing a snapping sound.
