True West comes to State Coal Mine this January

2 min read

WONTHAGGI Theatrical Group presents True West, a play, by celebrated American playwright Sam Shepard.

True West is a societal observation of its time with the WTG production faithfully honouring Sam Shepard’s brilliant script.

Consumed by sibling rivalry and envy, brothers Lee and Austin embark on a volatile journey of personal revelation and self-destruction.

The stamina and sustained excellence of the leads, Corey Green and Joel Stevenson, who have 100 per cent stage time, as they live the smouldering jealousy, latent envy and toxic relationship of brothers Lee and Austin, will have you ride the gamut of emotions and be left in a state of wonderment having witnessed theatre unlike anything before.

“I wanted to write a play about double nature, one that wouldn’t be symbolic or metaphorical or any of that stuff,” Sam Shepard said.

“I just wanted to give a taste of what it feels like to be
two-sided. It’s a real thing, double nature. I think we’re split in a much more devastating way than psychology can ever reveal. It’s not so cute. Not some little thing we can get over. It’s something we’ve got to live with.”

True West was first performed at the Magic Theatre in San Fransico with the world premiere on July 10, 1980. In 1983, it was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Whilst True West has seen many productions since its premiere it was most notably turned into a filmed version of the play and broadcast on Showtime in August 2002, starring Bruce Willis and Chad Smith.

In 2019, it was revived on Broadway at the American Airlines Theatre by the Roundabout Theatre Company, directed by James Macdonald it starred Ethan Hawke as Lee and Paul Dano as Austin.

Six shows only from January 17 – 26, so don’t miss out! Tickets on sale now at wtg.org.au.
