New mural for the Leongatha Railway Precinct

1 min read

THE mural will be painted by Ash Taylor who was selected following a public voting process which attracted 365 entries. Ash’s concept design combined ecologically significant flora and fauna with a contemporary design and engaging colours. It received 56 per cent of the votes.

The mural will be painted on the back of the Bair Street facing shops and will bring the blank, black canvas to life. Ash has a background in visual communications and worked in graphic design before moving her career to muralism. She has completed large-scale murals in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia and recently facilitated a workshop in Brisbane to teach artists techniques to scale artworks to mural sized proportions.

The concept design has now been finalised, and Ash will start painting in November. People are welcome to come to the precinct site to observe the mural take shape.

The mural is funded as part of the $6 million Great Southern Rail Trail Railway Precincts Project (Leongatha and Korumburra), which received a total of $3 million through the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund and $2 million through the Victorian Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund.

“I would like to thank the three short-listed artists who each came up with impressive mural concepts and congratulate Ash on her successful design,” South Gippsland Shire Council Mayor, Nathan Hersey said.

“We are excited with the final design that has been created and look forward to seeing it progress over the next month.”
