What better use for Berninneit?

1 min read

At the council’s February meeting in question time the following question was asked by Linda Marston, topic Bernnineit Art Exhibit. “As part of the ‘Kids as Catalysts’ program some Newhaven primary students created posters promoting awareness of Wildlife on Phillip Island. They were unable to exhibit these at Bernnineit for free. As BCSC is partnered with this program, shouldn’t Council promote such projects as examples of young leadership?”

The response by the CEO Greg Box was that Council does provide support and access for Kids as Catalyst program, however, not every request is able to be accommodated. The group was advised that the best option was to hire a community space in the building. Staff also spent some time with the group advising how best to promote their work and provided key contacts within media.

I have great difficulty understanding the BCSC’s CEO reply, “not every request is able to be accommodated” but best option was to hire a community space within the building.

Councillors should note, Berninneit is a community centre for the community’s use and should be managed by a Committee of Management in conjunction with council. Mr Box would you please explain to the children of Newhaven primary school, how they raise the necessary money required to exhibit their posters in our community centre.

Councillors, please note the children of Phillip Island and Bass Coast are our future, the Bass Coast CEO/Council and councillors should encourage our children.

My harsh comments are shame on you, the ball is in your court Mr Box (and Councillors) to give the children the opportunity to display their artwork which displays the Wildlife on Phillip in our community centre for free.

In fact, this is just the thin edge of the wedge, where is the memorabilia the community was promised would be rehung in the building once completed?
