Australian beef hit by Trump tariff announcement

1 min read

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has responded to President Donald Trump’s latest imposition of tariffs on Australian goods exported to America, labelling the move “not unexpected but totally unwarranted”.
“A reciprocal tariff would be zero, not 10 percent,” he said, adding that the Australian Government won’t be introducing reciprocal tariffs in response to President Trump’s move.
Mr Trump used his announcement to single out Australia, declaring that while Australians are good people the nation won’t accept American beef, stressing that while he understands the desire to protect farmers America will do the same from midnight.
It was unclear what he meant, although it appears more likely he was referring to imposing a tariff on Australian beef coming into the USA rather than banning it, given America’s insatiable desire for grinding beef for its ever-popular burgers and the shortfall of local beef to meet demand.
America imported $3.3 billion of Australian beef in the 2023/24 financial year, easily Australia’s largest export to the USA.
Uncooked beef from the USA is not allowed into Australia for biosecurity reasons.
“We will not compromise on biosecurity,” Mr Albanese declared.
