Car crashes into Wrench’s window in Wonthaggi

1 min read

SHOPPERS in Wonthaggi’s main street, Graham Street, heard a loud bang and a scream as a VW Golf careered out of control and into the front window of the iconic Wrench’s Footwear store in the middle of the town’s shopping centre on Saturday morning, April 15.

Police have since posted the following report on Bass Coast Eyewatch:

This morning (15th of April 2023), at about 11:00am, your local police from the Bass Coast Highway Patrol, along with paramedics from Ambulance Victoria, volunteer firefighters from Wonthaggi CFA and volunteer rescuers from SES Wonthaggi Unit responded to an incident in Graham Street Wonthaggi.

Police believe that a silver Volkswagen hatch drove over the footpath, and impacted some shop stock displays, with the shop displays then partially impacting the windows of the shop.

Shop staff and passers-by then assisted the driver to exit the vehicle.

The driver, an 80-year-old female from Wonthaggi, was assessed by paramedics, but was not required to be taken to hospital for assessment.

The cause of the incident is still being investigated, but is believed to be the result of driver error.

No persons were injured, and the damage to shop stock, and the building itself was not substantial.

Graham Street, and the nearby footpath was closed for a short period of time due to the incident.

Your local police would like to thank those who rendered assistance to the driver.
