NEW South Gippsland Shire Council Mayor, Cr John Schelling, will be the first to share a laugh with his constituents over his first job in the new role.
The first media release issued by the shire’s administration has Mayor Schelling welcoming the opening of a new “accessible public toilet” block at Bena.
“It is fantastic to see this new facility open to our community and visitors. The new, centrally-located toilet will provide a convenient rest stop for users of the Great Southern Rail Trail and the Bena community,” said Mayor Schelling this week.
“I’d like to thank the previous Strzelecki Ward Councillors for their advocacy for this project,” he said.
The new facility is centrally located in the town to benefit users of McGrath Park, commuters, cyclists and pedestrians (particularly those who use the Great Southern Rail Trail). It was prefabricated off-site to ensure minimal disruption to users of the area.
Key features of the new facility include:
* Solar-powered lighting for safety.
* Rainwater tank for hand washing.
* Collection well system to prioritise efficient waste disposal and maintain hygiene standards.
Throughout the design and construction of the facility, careful attention was paid to the local environment to ensure it did not disrupt the surrounding area.
New line marking in the car park will be occurring shortly.
Speaking to the Sentinel-Times this week, Cr Schelling had a laugh but also acknowledged it was important that local councils delivered on community necessities as a first order responsibility.
