Members of the Loch community and the broader region have expressed disgust after the bronze gate post plaques commemorating local WWI diggers were stolen from Loch Memorial Reserve.
“Nothing is sacred anymore,” local Frank Springer said in a post on the Loch Community Noticeboard on Facebook.
He said the plaques were removed from the granite pillars early on the morning of Monday April 7.
“These plaques are in honour of locals who gave up their lives so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we have today,” Frank declared.
He labelled the perpetrator a “lowlife scum”, saying the person’s actions have affected many people.
“By the way, we have you on camera,” Frank wrote.
Korumburra RSL’s Tony Moon and Brenda Jordan also expressed horror at the crime.
“Brenda and I have done a lot of research on those guys, so we know the stories behind a lot of the names that were displayed and some of those families are still local families,” Tony said of those whose names feature on the missing plaques.
“I hope they get caught; it’s so disrespectful,” Brenda said.
The plaques were installed in the 1920s.
“Honour rolls and memorials are a sacred thing, particularly in a small community, and coming up to Anzac Day,” Tony said.
