Election date set to be called ‘pretty imminently’, according to the Prime Minister

AN ANNOUNCEMENT around the date of the next federal election is “imminent” according to the Prime Minister, who spoke on radio show Triple M Hobart this morning.

“I can confirm that I'm not calling it today, but I will call it soon. I think that Australians want to get on with it,” the Prime Minister stated in conversation with Triple M Breakfast hosts Kaz McMullen and Andy Taylor.

The statement came before the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet shared and then quickly deleted a post on social media platform X (formerly twitter) stating ‘The Government is now operating in accordance with caretaker conventions, pending the outcome of the 2025 federal election’. The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet have been quick to claim the post was an error.

The government is not yet in caretaker mode, however, but suspicions of a Friday announcement were raised earlier in the week after Opposition Leader Peter Dutton announced he would be presenting his budget reply on Thursday evening.

The announcement is expected to draw attention away from the Opposition Leader’s speech.

There are still three possible dates for an election to be held, May 3, May 10 and May 17, with The Australian citing multiple sources in the Labor party when they reported the national vote would be held on May 3 earlier today.
