Have your say on Draft San Remo Structure Plan

2 min read

PERCHED on the edge of Western Port Bay the once quiet fishing village of San Remo is about to double in size with the main growth front planned from Potters Hill to Punch Bowl Road.

Bass Coast Shire has invited local residents to have their say on the future of San Remo at a public consultation session from 6pm on Wednesday, March 26, and a pop-up session from 2pm to 6pm on Wednesday, April 2.

“Everything’s up for discussion,” said Strategic Planner Ellen Whatley.

Capital works, stormwater, streetscapes, urban design and land use will all be included in the discussions.

To support the expected changes in San Remo, particularly for older residents, the draft structural plan outlines how housing, infrastructure, and services can evolve while protecting the coastal character and environment.

With the average age of residents expected to remain at 52, the draft plan also considers transport and economic growth for San Remo.

“San Remo has a deep connection to the coastal landscape and a strong sense of community,” said Ms Whatley.

Locals greet each other at the bakery, fishing boats bring in the day’s catch, and visitors pause to enjoy lunch on the foreshore, but San Remo is changing.

“Climate change is a big consideration,” said Principal Strategic Planner Melanie Wright.

Heat, bushfire, coastal impact and the build-up of sand will all be considered.

Lions Park and the foreshore are under pressure for an upgrade.

“San Remo has the lowest canopy cover in Bass Coast Shire,” said Ms Wright.

Weed species need to be managed and opportunities explored for planting trees.

Initial consultation sessions were held from October to December 2023 where the community highlighted areas of interest, suggested ideas, and provided feedback.

Following the consultation phase a 12-member community reference group was formed bringing together locals with diverse perspectives to help shape the future.

Beautification of the foreshore will include views of the bridge, cultural events and an improved playground.

Car parking and public access to the San Remo jetty are also ongoing issues.

“The precinct is a workplace as well as a tourist attraction.”

The possibility of a recreational water-play or aqua-activities area is being explored.

“Parks Victoria is a key stakeholder,” added Ms Wright.

The consultation sessions on March 26 and April 2 are the final stage in the consultation process and council is seeking feedback from residents, businesses, and community groups.

Bass Coast Mayor Cr Rochelle Halstead said “San Remo is such a wonderful place to live, and I want future generations to enjoy it as we do today. This plan will guide how our town grows, while preserving what makes it special. I encourage everyone to share their thoughts to help shape its future.”

Feedback on the San Remo Structure Plan is open until April 28.
