Interchange Wonthaggi celebrates ten years of YAS

A DAY of games and music marked the tenth anniversary of the Young Adult Service (YAS) program at Interchange in Wonthaggi.

A day program that typically runs from 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday.

YAS provides participants over the age of eighteen with a range of activities at Interchange sites in Wonthaggi, Morwell and Bairnsdale.

The day of celebration in Wonthaggi was shared by sixty participants, family members, representatives of community groups and program supporters.

YAS provides bus trips, skill-based activities and Fun Fridays.

Mondays have a coffee and chat session followed by outdoor sports and gardening or cooking.

On Tuesday YAS participants enjoy abilities sport, a drum circle, a healthy cooking program and South Coast FM.

Wednesday is swimming and library day.

Music practice and tenpin bowling is popular on Thursday and Fun Fridays can include mini-golf, barbecues or movies.

A favourite day out on Friday is the Traralgon Golf Club.

Community Access Worker, Ian Burke said YAS has twenty participants in Wonthaggi aged between eighteen and sixty-five, with attendance varying depending on the day.

The Eagles ‘n Snakes band rehearses regularly at Interchange performing at the Bass Coast Special School, Inverloch/Kongwak Primary School, Powlett River Primary School and Inverloch Twilight Market.

“The band named themselves,” said Ian Burke.

Eagles ‘n Snakes express themselves musically by writing original music.

“They tell their own stories.”
