One local winner emerges from Country Week Tennis

4 min read

THE curtain has come down on another Tennis Victoria Country Week, at the best venue for the annual event, at Swan Hill and once again the South Gippsland area has punched above its weight with participants. Although not with winners this year.

The Leongatha and district region had a contingent of 55 players involved, plus lots of supporters and a great week was had by all.

Rising above the pack was the Section 4 Women’s team SGD Crew which defeated Castlemaine CC’s in the grand final 2-23 vs 1-14.

Among the team members were Country Week regulars Michelle Krohn and Bronwyn Williams who with two women from Dubbo and one from Kyneton (Jo, Ebony and Sarah) came away as the only local premiers.

Several local teams made the grand final however, Shelley Walker’s BBB’s team who were runners-up in Section 7 and the team of Rhonda Newton, Jacinta Pickering and Rachel Michael who were runners-up in Section 14.

Another Leongatha team in Women’s Section 13 including Judy Langstaff, Renee Littlejohn, Kira Pocklington, Sophie kreutzberger and Evie Dekker were also runners-up.

Leongatha teams didn’t have quite as much success in the Men’s with the Leongatha Beers team of Jimmy Monoghan, Luke Bowman, Jacob Byrnes and Nick Beale finishing runners-up after a big campaign in Section 12 defeated by LobStars 2-23 to 1-14.

The weather was pretty hot during the week, with 38 degrees on two days, 36 degrees and 34 on two other days with play postponed on one of those hot days for a while until the temperature came back down.

Tennis Victoria Country Week 2025 brought together people from all across the state, and country. Competitors travelled far and wide to come to the event, including from Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Camden, Bathurst, Narromine, Merimbula, Devonport, Albury and even Brisbane, to name a few locations.

On the final day, there could be only 28 winners.

The Lecontes ended their two-year winning streak in the Men’s Section 1 Grand Final to Espresso Martinis, while Tandara nabbed first place as winners of the Women’s Section 1 Grand Final, defeating Goulburn Murray Grinders.

Tonny Try Hards were crowned winners of the Gilchrist Pearce Cup, an award nominated by the Country Week players for any team across the tournament who have exemplified the spirit of Country Week.
