Rain derails Great Vic Bike Ride route

1 min read

CONTINUAL heavy rain has forced the Great Victorian Bike Ride to detour to Yarram Recreation Reserve this evening with the campsite at Port Albert no longer welcoming the almost 3000 riders and support crew.

The slight adjustment means there has also been changes to the routes today and tomorrow.

In a statement overnight John Myers of the Bicycle Network noted they were disappointed plans had changed.

“We are very disappointed that we won’t be heading to Port Albert as planned. We appreciate all the incredible support the Port Albert community have provided and have invited them to join us in Yarram. We also want to thank the Yarram community for welcoming us with open arms at such late notice.”

Though a big day (100 kilometres in total), the additional 12.3 kilometre journey to Port Albert may not deter those keen for an afternoon ride into the seaside village to check it out - so drivers be aware...

The new route will see riders turn west down Pound Road East before heading north on the South Gippsland Highway into Yarram.

Tomorrow (December 2) riders will take Tarra Valley Road from Yarram, turn left onto North Road before jumping onto Pound Road West and following the road through to Alberton West.

From the rest stop at Alberton West Recreation Reserve riders will head down Lanes Road, jump onto the South Gippsland Highway and continue as previously planned onto Fish Creek via Welshpool, Woorarra East, Toora North, Toora, Bennison and Foster.

New route specs

1 Dec (Sale to Yarram): 100km | 392m elevation

2 Dec (Yarram to Fish Creek): 81km | 647m elevation
