This Little Piggy came to Kongwak Primary School

1 min read

MEET Trevor, a rescued pig from Amber Creek Farm in Fish Creek. Trevor was rescued by Damian Howard, who teaches at Kongwak PS on a Friday in the junior classroom. Each Friday, students were in charge of looking after Trevor by taking turns to bottle feed the piglet. In between literacy and numeracy lessons Trevor would sleep in his crate in the classroom.

Students learnt to understand the sayings “squeal like a pig” and “eat like a pig”. Trevor was also an inspiration for writing lessons on adjectives and adjective phrases to make writing more interesting.

Having Trevor at school reminded our older students about the time some piglets escaped their home to sniff out and ‘pig out’ on the acorns in the school yard. From these memories the school reached out to local farmer Lee Storti, who owns an organic pig farm near the school, to see if they could come visit her pig and piglets. Leading up to visiting, the students spent their lunch times raking and collecting acorns to take to Lee’s pigs to feed them for a treat.

If you are interested in talking to staff about authentic hands-on learning experiences, Kongwak Primary School has open tours coming up. These tours are open to all prospective families, including

Preps for 2025. Our first tours are being held on Wednesday, April 24 and Thursday, May 2 at 3pm. For any inquiries, please contact the school office on 5674 1253.
