Visitors flock to Newhaven College for picture perfect open day

2 min read

THE spectacular 82-hectare Newhaven College site was looking its absolute best for the college’s annual open day last Saturday, with not a cloud in the sky, and prospective parents and students streaming in throughout the day.

And there was a lot to see from the performing arts wing and huge gymnasium/assembly hall added in recent times, to the more established parts of the college, including Year 9 Environment Centre, Senior School, trade centre, library and visual arts centre, plus the new developments taking place.

One of them is the new mountain bike pump track going in as part of a fully-supported program at the school, already with 272 metres of the track built with the help of parents, staff and a Year 9 Trail Building Project whereby the kids are helping to design and build the facility.

College principal Tony Corr was delighted with the interest shown and the public response to the day.

“It’s a great opportunity to see the school and we have various activities going on during the day so that visitors can get a good idea how the various facilities work,” Mr Corr said.

An added attraction this year were the footy practice matches between Inverloch Kongwak and Traralgon.

Despite the major developments in recent times, the college isn’t resting on its laurels with the mountain bike track, new ‘Little Haven’ kindergarten and college observatory set to open soon.

And there are further significant projects in the planning stages as well.

For those unable to attend, Newhaven College tours can be arranged through the College’s Registrar Belinda Manning at belinda.manning@newhavencol.vic.edu.au, 5956 7505 or book online through the Newhaven College website.

Alumni Reunion

Newhaven College is in the process of growing its alumni connections, so the annual reunion is the perfect place to get things moving. The school welcomed back students who graduated in 1984 (40 years), 1994 (30 years), 2004 (20 years), 2014 (10 years) and 2019 (5 years). They met for morning tea in our pavilion with some of our long-term staff before Head of Learning Mrs Karen Milkins-Hendry guided the group on a tour of the school. For many of these students, even the most recently departed, there were plenty of new and exciting facilities to share with the returning graduates. For some, it was their first time setting foot on the Phillip Island Rd campus. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to catch up and reminisce.
