Wentworth Road fire likely an ‘illegal burn-off’, they say

WONTHAGGI fire fighters had a busy day on Thursday, February 13.

There was another bin fire in Biggs Drive in the morning.

Twelve fire trucks and a helicopter water bomber responded to a relatively small but concerning bushfire in the Wonthaggi Wetland Reserve at 3pm and on a Total Fire Ban day in the Central region of the state, including Bass Coast, they were called to what has been reported as an illegal burn-off in Wentworth Wonthaggi just before 8pm.

There was also a callout at San Remo late morning when a tradesman using an angle grinder sparked a small grass fire. San Remo and Phillip Island brigades attended but the fire had been extinguished before the brigades arrived and ensured the newly built-up area was safe.

How can there be that many fires on a total fire ban day?

The bushfire in Wonthaggi earlier in the afternoon was located in an area behind the Wonthaggi Plaza, deep in the bush opposite the Wonthaggi Pony Club site and was under control by early evening.
