Young footy stars backed by PowerKick

2 min read

WONTHAGGI’S football rising stars will be honing their skills with the launch of PowerKick this season.

In lieu of Auskick, Wonthaggi Power Football Netball Club is proud to introduce its own program, which will support young players to develop basic footy skills and social skills in a fun, safe environment.

“It’s something we’ve been thinking about as a club for a while,” Power’s junior footy club president Matt Coyne said.

“When the previous coordinator of Auskick moved on, we reached out for a new coordinator. However, the coaches of the junior and senior club decided we are comfortable in that environment, so why don’t we put a program together ourselves. It gained legs from there and we are hoping to get around 50 kids involved to start off with.”

Matt said the club would like to see more girls getting involved in the hopes of breaking into the league’s girls’ division in the future.
To support the growth of female participation, members of the Bass Coast Breakers and the former Power Youth Girls team will be assisting with the PowerKick coaching.

This includes Macie Gilmour, who is a former VFL player with the Box Hill Hawks.
Macie now plays for the Warragul Industrials and will be assisting with PowerKick over a few Wednesday nights, with a focus on encouraging girls to develop their skills and gain the motivation to pursue the sport further.

The program will include eight sessions, run by the club’s junior and senior coaching staff, with additional help from the wider playing group.
PowerKick is aimed at children between the ages of five and 12.

For many, it will be their first step into the world of Australian Rules football and will hopefully bolster junior numbers going forward.
“It’s all about getting the kids out there, having fun and taking a break from the TV environment,” Matt said.
“It’s also about giving them a strong social environment. We can help them manage social issues as a group and try to get them to take care of each other.”

The first 45-minute session will kick off on Wednesday, May 1, at 4pm.

Registration fees are $50, and each child will also receive a gift pack of a Sherrin all-weather football, training top and drawstring bag.
