SOUTH Gippsland dairy breeders had quite a bit of success at International Dairy Week at Tarura last week, being in the running for the interbreed championship and claiming some major breed silverware along the way
In the International Dairy Week Senior Champion Interbreed competition, a Guernsey cow “Kerrilyn Pistoll Peach” shown by N & S Wilkie, Pentland Hills was crowned the week’s overall winner and a Holstein “Avonlea Stanleycup Evie” (Stanleycup) shown by J&M Deenen and D&A Mathews Leongatha South claiming the reserve interbreed title.
But the Leongatha South partnership walked away with possibly the most coveted title of the whole week, the Grand Champion Exhibit sponsored by Holstein Australia with Avonlea Stanleycup Evie.
The cow also won the Senior Champion Cow title sponsored by Semex and Holstein Australia with “View Fort Brasilia Saturday”, (Brasilia) shown by View Fort Holsteins, Tarwin, taking out the Reserve Senior Champion Cow.
Speaking after the announcement of Supreme Champion Holstein, both Alex Mathews and Maree Zanders-Deenen admitted to being emotional.
“Elated, emotional. The cow calved down six weeks ago and Maree has been looking after her since then. She’s done all the hard work,” said Alex Mathews, saying how much she enjoyed showing the cow with Maree.
Maree was delighted.
“I’ve been dreaming about this moment for 25 years,” said Maree of the long journey to taking off such an enormous award.
