RELIEVED to have his car and licence back after being accused of excessive speed a Dalyston P-plate driver has gone to extraordinary lengths to prove his innocence.
The driver’s mother always backed her son’s version of events. Beau told his mother “Mum, I didn’t do it” and that was enough proof for Jacqui Allamby.
The week of high drama for Beau Dobbins began early evening on the outskirts of Wonthaggi on the road from Inverloch where a new sixty-kilometre-an-hour speed restriction applies.
Highway Patrol claimed to have clocked Beau travelling well in excess of the speed limit.
“One-hundred and twenty-six kilometres an hour” is what they claimed said Jacqui.
Beau’s probationary licence was suspended for a mandatory twelve months, and his Statesman sedan impounded.
“Local police are constantly patrolling main roads and back roads, and this type of dangerous behaviour will not be tolerated in Bass Coast and South Gippsland” Bass Coast Police Service Area posted on ‘Eyewatch’.
Beau Dobbins claimed he was not speeding, and that his white car had instead been overtaken by another vehicle, possibly a red Mazda sedan which was obscured to police.
“I’m going to go doorknocking to see if I can get some footage,” Beau told his mother.
Going door-to-door to find a business with surveillance video, Beau struck gold.
Days later a business owner posted she had provided footage that clearly shows a red car flying by, seconds before Beau drove by, hope it helps.
It certainly did help.
Senior Sergeant Jason Hullick from Bass Coast Police said once police became aware of the new information they reversed the suspension of Beau’s licence, dropped all charges and returned his car.
“We spoke to Beau personally,” said Senior Sergeant Hullick.
Police have not yet been able to locate the driver of the red vehicle.
