POLICE are at the scene of a car accident in Cowes where a small white sedan has mounted the kerb in Thompson Avenue and crashed through the Happy Homes and Gifts Store.
The incident occurred at 7am on Saturday morning when the car driven by a 70 year old man has crashed through the Woolworths plaza doors fronting Thompson Avenue and crashed into the shop smashing through the stores roller doors.
Ambulance Victoria attended the scene and assessed the driver but cleared him of any injury.
It is understood the driver hit the accelerator instead brake allegedly while tying his shoes causing the mishap.
Staff at Woolworths who had just opened the doors only seconds before the incident were lucky to escape injury.
“We’d just opened the (lock on the) doors when bang bang he crashed through the doors and then into the shop,” said a Woolies staff member.
“We could have been killed. We were just there opening the door a few seconds earlier for our opening at 7am.
“The man is alright that’s the main thing but we were lucky too”.
SES also reportedly attended the scene.
Woolworths supermarket is open and operating after a brief period of closure while emergency services were on the scene.
