Riding for Disabled on show at Woolamai Races

THE Woolamai race committee recognised the achievements of the Riding for Disabled Woolamai group at the end-of-the-year whirlwind races, held last week.

Local doyen of equestrian sport, Sally Frances OAM and para-Olympian, Dianne Barnes were interviewed trackside.

Both women have a remarkable record in equestrian sport.

Sally received an OAM in 2019 for her services to Horse Sports and people with a disability. She has attended no less than six Paralympics. In 2012, she led the Australian team at the London

Paralympics, where one of her riders won a gold medal.

Dianne was an accomplished rider, competing not only as a jockey but also as a top-show rider. She has an enviable record in the ring at Royal Shows around the country, taking out National Hack of the Year. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and dystonia and then focused her efforts on Para-dressage. Dianne is now focused on preparing to compete at the world championships in Aachen, Germany in 2026.

Riding for the Disabled was set up at Woolamai racetrack two years ago. A wonderful group have been gradually built up and additional programs will be offered to those with a disability who would prefer to do groundwork.

Bruce Spiden, President of Woolamai RDA has recognised the wonderful support of the racecourse and Sally Frances to establish the group stating, “We are now in a position with a great volunteer group and excellent coaches to work on a number of areas to build up the group’s activities. We really want to encourage more people with a disability to come and join in the activities, along with more volunteers.”

For those interested in becoming involved, Bruce can be contacted on 0419 372 581 or by email at: rdawoolamai@gmail.com.
